Keeping Kids Actively Engaged Before and During Hybrid Learning (South Carolina)


Geiger Elementary School is located in Ridgeway, South Carolina and is one of nine schools in the Fairfield County School District. The school serves approximately 290 students in child development centers through 6th grade.

Finding ways to keep younger students actively engaged in learning was a priority for leaders in Fairfield County School District. First grade teachers Kielle Moore and Tierra Perkins were excited when the district announced a new resource for their Title I school. The district chose Walkabouts, a flexible, web-based platform, to keep students moving and learning. When the COVID-19 pandemic caused schools to move to either fully remote or hybrid learning, teachers at Geiger Elementary already had an easy solution for reinforcing key learning concepts across language arts, math, and reading.


With the pivot to hybrid learning, teachers at Geiger Elementary were tasked with simultaneously teaching students in the classroom and those at home. For brain breaks, some teachers used GoNoodle. To provide active learning opportunities, Kielle Moore and Tierra Perkins chose Walkabouts. With Walkabouts, they could quickly find a language arts, reading, or math lesson, then share their screens with students and complete a Walkabout as a class.

Additional Outcomes

At a time when students needed it most, Walkabouts provided a fun, engaging learning experience. Each Walkabout also includes built-in progress checkers so students can self-check whether they understand a concept. This helps teachers easily identify gaps in understanding.
